Sydney-siders, if you haven’t yet been acquainted, meet your new weekday lunch spot. The Alpha Foodstore is located right next door to Alpha Restaurant on Castlereagh street in the heart of the city. Stop by to grab some Greek coffee, a pie for lunch and a sweet treat. Or even stock up on artisan Greek condiments for your pantry.

Alpha Foodstore

The Alpha Foodstore prides itself on its signature pies. They are freshly made and can be ordered ready-to-eat or to take home and reheat. Full of flavour, they have quickly become my go-to comfort food. The pies range from Alpha Spanakopita, to chicken, mushroom and saffron, and 3 cheeses with caramelised onion and mint. My favourite? Hard to choose. But I have to say the lamb was so delicious I think it will be hard to go past. The meat has that melt-in-your-mouth texture that you always want but is often hard to find.

Dionysus Exta Virgin Olive Oil

Another proud product featured at Alpha Foodstore is the Dionysus Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Produced by Dennis Gizas, Dionysus is a family business of olive oil made in Greece and imported to Australia. There a two types of Dionysus Olive Oil available, ‘Robust’ and ‘Delicate,’ and each made with kalamata olives.

The desserts are dangerously addictive. They’re buttery, rich and decadent. The chocolate baklava is a stand-out. One small nibble is enough to satisfy any sugar craving. Alpha also stocks Merenda, which is a Greek Hazelnut and Chocolate spread. It is similar to Nutella although the hazelnut flavour is more prominent and its consistency is a little more syrupy. Like Nutella, it is so good I could eat it straight from the jar with a spoon. And I did. I’m not ashamed to admit it.
